Does ChatGPT Have Ads? How ChatGPT Advertising Works for Businesses
Yes. OpenAI now shows clearly labelled sponsored results inside ChatGPT. For businesses, that means a new place to be found: right beneath the answer to a question the person has just asked. This guide explains how ChatGPT advertising works in plain terms, without hype.
Where a ChatGPT ad appears
When a conversation touches a commercial topic, a visually distinct card marked as sponsored can appear beneath ChatGPT's own answer. It sits below the answer, not inside it, and OpenAI states that ads do not change what the answer says. That labelling is part of what makes the format trustworthy to the person reading it.
How targeting works: context hints, not keywords
Search ads run on keywords. ChatGPT ads run on context hints: a sentence or two describing the situation you want to reach, such as a person comparing accountants for a new business. You describe the moment, and the auction decides when your ad is relevant to the conversation. Advertisers do not see people's chats or personal details.
The three ad formats
A sponsored result is a single labelled card with a headline, short copy and a link, suited to service and B2B businesses. A product carousel is a scrollable row of products with image, name and price, suited to ecommerce. A Sponsored Agent lets a person chat with a branded assistant after seeing your ad, suited to businesses where a short conversation helps someone decide.
How it is bought
Placement is decided by an auction weighted for relevance, so a more relevant ad can beat a bigger budget. It behaves more like Google's ad auction than a fixed-price media buy. Availability differs by country and changes quickly, and being able to open an advertiser account does not always mean your customers are in a market where ads are shown, so check both before you plan spend.
What to prepare before you start
Three things matter more than the ad itself. A landing page that answers the exact question the person asked. Conversion tracking, so you can tell which conversations produce enquiries. And a clear idea of the moments you want to appear in, written as context hints. Without these, even a well-placed ad has nowhere useful to send people.
Should you run ChatGPT ads alongside Google and Meta?
For most businesses it is an addition, not a replacement. Google catches people who already know what they are searching for, Meta builds demand, and ChatGPT reaches people mid-question. Treat it as a test with a defined budget and a clear measure of success, and keep the other channels running while you learn what works.
